The Creation of New Orleans

Inhabited by tribes of Indigenous Americans, the site of the current city of New Orleans was referred to as Balbancha or “the land of many tongues.” The soil of the land between the Ponchartrain and the Mississippi was rich and ready to grow many crops, which led to it being a popular area for settlement when European explorers began to find the area.
